Semaglutide is a non-stimulant medication (meaning it does not raise heart rate or blood pressure like phentermine). It belongs to the drug class GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist which mimics a naturally occurring satiety hormone in our bodies. When we eat, GLP-1 is released from our intestines and sends signals for our brain to realize the stomach is full. The once weekly injection acts on several areas to regulate hunger and fullness cues, leading to decreased appetite and feeling full sooner so you are not able to over-eat.
Semaglutide as brand name Wegovy is FDA approved for weight loss. Semaglutide as brand name Ozempic is FDA approved for Type 2 Diabetes. The medication Semaglutide is dosed differently depending on medical indication. Both are given as an injection once every 7 days.
Weight loss of 1-2lbs per week is expected. Some individuals will lose up to 10-15lbs the first month, however the average weight loss is up to 8lbs per month.
The most common side effect with GLP-1 weight loss medication is nausea which is often remedied by eating small, frequent meals. Another common side effect is constipation. Most side effects occur during the first few days after starting the medication and subside as the body adjusts to the medication.
To be considered for weight loss medication you must have a BMI of 27 or greater. Other health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes can help qualify for insurance approval as long as your BMI is 27 or greater. Individuals with BMI of 30 or greater qualify without other health risks.
